Prior to the gym’s opening, we wanted to stay away from anything with MMA in it’s title. Although it’s a sanctioned sport constantly growing in popularity, we felt it would attract the wrong element. However, shortly after the gym’s launch, we quickly realized a lot of the local Karate & Tae Kwon Do Schools (styles that are less effective for self defense ) were calling themselves “Martial Arts” gyms to disguise their traditional martial arts moniker. Unfortunately ECMA was getting looped in with those gyms. Some of the local gyms even have MMA in their title and frankly these places have as much to do with MMA as water polo! So, after much thought, East Cobb Martial Arts will now be called East Cobb MMA. We’ve decided to embrace the sport we love!

The only thing changing at EMCA is the name, we’ll still have the same great classes and we will still do discipline specific training with those disciplines being Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Muay Thai Kickboxing. Through Mixed Martial Arts competition, these disciplines have been proven time and time again to be to be the best styles of self-defense ever created. Also, the name change will differentiate our particular style of Jiu-Jitsu within the Jiu-Jitsu community. Although all forms of competition are fantastic for a students growth, we are not a sport Jiu-Jitsu gym. Our style stays close to the Gracie family’s “self-defense” first approach to Jiu-Jitsu. We prepare our students for the worst case scenario of an opponent striking you while on the ground. Our classes will continue to be taught in a clean, safe, fun environment but from this point forward, East Cobb Martial Arts is now called East Cobb MMA!

Stay tuned for new Monday night classes and a brand new website coming in September. Know someone interested in martial arts training? Tell them about our free trial week of classes!
