In 1993, Rorion Gracie created the UFC to show the world that Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was the best singular self-defense system ever created. 24 years later there’s still some confusion to which style of martial art is best for self-defense. The answer is still Jiu-Jitsu!

For many years, when people thought of martial arts, traditional martial arts would come to mind. Flashy kicks, forms, routines and single power punches usually comprised these styles. It was thought that if one practiced these techniques and advanced through the belt system, they would be able to protect themselves against any attacker.

This is simply not the case.

Even though Mixed Martial Arts has blossomed In to entire different sport of its own, the early days of the UFC showed that traditional styles were ineffective in a real time situation while Royce Gracie’s Jiu-Jitsu style enable him to protect himself and even finish a much larger opponent.

Traditional martial arts have many benefits: discipline, fitness, honor and respect. However, effective self-defense is not one of these attributes.

It is simply unrealistic to think that a small man, a woman or child knocks out a bigger attacker with flying kick or single power punch.

Jiu-Jitsu’s realistic approach incorporates distance management, SOLID self-defense techniques on the ground or standing, and most importantly, it instills confidence that these moves actually work. Also, through the act of “rolling” (jiu-jitsu sparring that resembles wrestling) participants can replicate the act of a physical struggle at a very intense level without anyone getting hurt. Jiu-Jitsu practitioners are taught to manage distance, stay safe, conserve energy, get away if possible and worst case scenario: finish with a submission hold.

Safely getting away from a bad situation is a lot more realistic for a woman or child than knocking an attacker out with a spinning wheel kick! That’s only in the movies folks!

If self-defense is high on your list of motivating factors for you or your child to take martial arts, please sign up for Jiu-Jitsu! Even if it’s not here, find a Jiu-Jitsu school near you and start training! You won’t regret it!
